Pensioners targeted by conmen

CONMEN pretending to be water board workers are targeting local pensioners.

Since the start of June, two men have visited several homes in Oldham pretending to need access to the homes of elderly residents.

While inside, the homeowners have been distracted by one of offenders while his accomplice has stolen money and personal items.

Police are investigating whether the same men are responsible for all the burglaries, and are warning residents to be on their guard and follow a few simple safety steps so they do not fall prey to conmen.

The offenders are usually smartly dressed in suits and ties.

The police have released an e-fit of one of the men involved and are appealing to anyone who recognises him to come forward.

Det Con Natalie Sykes said: “It is absolutely appalling that anyone would target elderly residents in our communities, preying upon their vulnerability. These men have gone to great lengths to give themselves the appearance of respectability and it is easy to see how they managed to fool people.

“We need to catch these men before they strike again. We are doing everything we can to find them.

“I would urge people to take a good look at the e-fit and if you either recognise this man, or see him going door-to-door in your area, call us immediately.

“I would also ask residents to take heed of a few simple safety tips. Always prearrange visits with any firm, ask for identification from anybody calling at your home and check they are who they say they are with a call to their employer.

“If in doubt, don’t allow them in and ask them to return at another time — a genuine caller will never be offended by these requests.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Greater Manchester Police on 0161-856 9042 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111.
