Shaw and Crompton Parish Council
A NEW member has joined the parish council to fill a vacancy.
David Murphy, of Moss Hey Street, Shaw, was co-opted to the North Ward as a Lib-Dem councillor to replace North Ward Conservative councillor Kevin Howard.
Mr Howard ceased to be a member of the council after not attending a meeting for six months.
Mr Murphy was inspired to get involved in grassroots politics after teaming up with neighbours to oppose plans for a development of 80 houses off his street.
P+D Northern Steels Ltd drew up the plans, saying it needs to sell its base there and move to a more efficient site to keep the business going and safeguard jobs.
Residents formed a group to raise concerns of overdevelopment and traffic problems.
Mr Murphy organised meetings and was inspired by his experience of working with neighbours and wants to do more in the community.
He has taken the place of Councillor Diane Williamson on the premises and the staffing and pay sub-committees.
A fresh grant of £250 has been presented to Shaw district scouts after a previous cheque for the same amount was lost.
