WORLD CUP FEVER:
POLICE and paramedics will join forces in Oldham tonight as England fans flock to bars and pubs to cheer on the national side in South Africa.
Following the 1-1 draw with America, Fabio Capello’s team take on Algeria (7.30pm) in a game they are expected to win and — with a final group clash with Slovenia to come on Wednesday (3pm) — all but secure their place in the World Cup’s knockout phase.
As with all England matches in this year’s tournament, a police officer will team up with a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle.
The team will not only provide a visual presence, but will also be on hand to offer advice and guidance on issues such as staying safe and sensible drinking.
Chief Superintendent Dave Anthony, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “By joining forces with the North-West Ambulance Service we can react more quickly, especially given the higher number of people coming into the town centre during the World Cup.”
The scheme will also be in operation in Manchester city centre.
“I’d like to remind revellers that while we want people to celebrate and enjoy the World Cup, we will not tolerate bad behaviour and will act robustly if necessary,” added Chief Supt Anthony.
