VANDALS caused £7,000 worth of damage after running amok in Alexandra Park.
A gang of yobs toppled and smashed four stone urns, trashed benches and damaged a manhole cover in the wrecking spree.
The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, and parks bosses have appealed for help in tracing those responsible.
Councillor Mark Alcock said: “There has not been a single case of serious vandalism in Alexandra Park since 2004 and it is very sad that this mindless incident has taken place now when the weather is good and so many people are using the park.
“It will cost around £7,000 to repair and replace the damaged items. I would urge anyone who can help to call the police on 0161-872 5050 or crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
The park has been popular with families over the summer months, since it won a £3.6 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant in 1997 to restore it to its former Victorian glory.
The award-winning Green Flag park has been kept in tip-top condition ever since.
