OXFORD and Cambridge have nothing on these crews, who brought boat racing to Oldham.

Dragon boat racing was one of the highlights of the seventh annual Oldham Borough Games at Alexandra Park.

Dozens of schoolchildren took part in the festival of sport, organised by Oldham Council’s Integrated Youth Service, Oldham Unite and the Alliance Fun Day.

Around 240 youngsters played in cricket, netball and rugby competitions, at the park and other venues, including Greenhill and Alexandra Park schools. The youth service’s dance group Fearless performed on the main stage in the park.

As well as taking part on the day, youngsters were also given guidance from sport development officers and activity development workers on how to join sports clubs in their communities.

Councillor Mark Alcock, cabinet member for citizens and neighbourhoods, said: “Encouraging youngsters to take part in sport from an early age is important as it helps form a healthy and active lifestyle.

“Events such as the Oldham Borough Games are always worthwhile as they not only showcase the skills of talented young athletes but also bring our communities together through sport.”
