Diggle diesel train blaze

Date published: 29 June 2010

FIRE crews from Oldham, Mossley and Ashton were called to tackle a fire in the engine of a diesel train in Diggle yesterday afternoon.

Insulation covering the engine on the middle carriage of the train, which was heading to Manchester from Leeds, had become covered in grease and oil which caught fire.

The train stopped 200 yards outside the Standedge train tunnel and passengers were transferred from the middle carriage to the end ones.

Firefighters were called out at 1.30pm and spent an hour at the scene cooling the engine down before switching it off.

Railtrack engineers were called to inspect the train before it used its remaining engines on the other carriages to carry on to Manchester.
