A 23-YEAR-OLD man stabbed himself in the thigh with a 6in kitchen knife following a row, a court heard.

Ryan Evitt then approached the Pack Horse Inn, Oldham Road, Failsworth, with the knife in his hand and told staff to call police and ambulance “before he did something”.

Oldham Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday how Evitt had been emotional after the row with his partner at his Cooke Street home in Failsworth on June 13.

He took the knife, went to a Failsworth churchyard and stabbed himself in the leg before heading to the pub where his was verbally abusive to staff and tried to provoke them.

The court heard how problems earlier in his life had accumulated and he was struggling to cope.

The father-of-two, who did not drink because it made him aggressive, had drunk eight pints of beer that day at a christening.

Martin Hays, defending, said Evitt had been talking to a friend that day which had brought up a number of issues from the past.

He said Evitt had suffered suicidal tendencies in the past and felt he had let down his partner and two children.

Mr Hays said: “He took this knife, went to a churchyard in Failsworth and stabbed himself in the right thigh.”

Mr Hays said Evitt had gone to the pub to use the public phones to call an ambulance but they had been removed.

He admitted getting into an argument with the pub doorman but landlady Lorraine McNair had calmed him down and taken the knife off him.

Evitt pleaded guilty to possessing a knife blade in a public place and the case was sent to Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court for sentencing on August 9.

Magistrates ordered a pre-sentence report and Evitt was given unconditional bail.
