Examinations officer retires after 43 years
OLDHAM College’s current longest-serving member of staff has retired after 43 years.
Linda Thornley started working as a clerk-typist straight from North Chadderton School.
And she has spent her whole career at the Rochdale Road college which has become a family institution.
Her husband John (63), a retired electrician, is an invigilator there while their daughter, Nicola (31), is in data-collection.
Only one member of staff has ever chalked up a longer service record than Linda (60) — it was 28 years ago when that person retired after 45 years.
Linda, who worked in the typing pool and was in charge of the general office before becoming examinations officer, has helped to make exams less stressful for thousands of students by ensuring they run smoothly.
She said: “You get to know the students. They come as youngsters and you see them right through to the end of their exams. Some of them have even become tutors here.”
Linda, of Mayfield Avenue, Springhead, is looking forward to a holiday in Spain and spending more time with her five-year-old grandson, Corey.
She is also an organiser with Oldham Aces dancing troupe which competes at carnivals throughout the summer.
Colleagues celebrated her retirement with a buffet and gifts included a camera and suitcases. A joint retirement and birthday bash was also held at Oldham’s Candlelight Club.
“I have enjoyed my time here. Everybody has been nice and friendly,” added Linda, who has never thought about working anywhere else.
Dedication
“I have got a lot of friends: students, staff and external exams bodies. I will miss it but I am going to come back and do a little bit of work on exams as and when required.”
Julie Davies, director of human resources and development, said: “Linda has been a committed member of staff for many years.
“The dedication and commitment of staff like Linda has enabled us to become one of the leading vocational colleges in the country.”
