Memories flood back as class of 1980 reunites

A NIGHT of laughter and memories was the successful result of former school pals from across the globe reuniting 30 years on.

Former Royton and Crompton School pupil David Bird turned detective to track down peers from 1980 and invite them to a get-together at Heyside’s Moss Inn.

More than 150 former pupils, their partners and ex-teachers packed the pub to catch-up three decades on. Some travelled from as far as New Zealand, Singapore and Spain to attend.

Mr Bird, from Royton, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic night. I could not have wished it to be more successful. It was quite full and everything I expected.

“There was laughter in the place from start to finish and so many memories came flooding back, things that happened in the school you had forgotten about.”

It took Mr Bird a year to organise the event as he traced more than 200 former pupils of the 270 of that year group.

A group of former classmates met at the pub on the first Wednesday of every month to plan the event — and the meetings for a pint and chinwag will now continue.

Mr Bird added: “It was worth all the effort. It was over too quickly if anything. We might do it again in four years time when we are all 50.

“I would like to thank everyone who turned up. They presented me with a weekend break away as a thank-you, which will go a long way to putting a smile back on my wife’s face as she has been neglected for the last few months.”
