SAFE and secure . . . Linda Meggison with Wesley Hanley
Linda praises firm after suffering burglary heartache
COMMUNITY spirit kicked into action to turn a Greenacres cancer patient’s despair into joy.
Linda Meggison, of Beech Avenue, was burgled last month while she was on a holiday she had booked to recover from her monthly chemotherapy.
The heartless thieves popped her back window out of its frame and left it propped up against the garden fence before stealing Linda’s laptop, cash and jewellery.
The 52-year-old’s insurance company said Linda would have to get her window replaced with a more modern, secure style before they would pay out for her loss.
After getting quotes from several local companies, Linda was faced with the prospect of taking out a personal loan for £310.
But Royton building company owner Wesley Hanley got in touch to say he would supply and fit Linda a new window for free.
Wesley, who runs Secure Sash, said: “When I read the story in the Chronicle I knew I wanted to do something to help.
“I went round a few local companies and told them what I was doing and they were all happy to supply me with the materials for free.
“I was happy to give up my time if it meant Linda could feel safe in her own home again.”
Linda, a mother-of-two, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer two years ago and has to undergo painful treatment every month at The Christie in Manchester.
She said: “When I realised I had been burgled after my holiday I was devastated and couldn’t sleep for worrying if the robbers would come back.
“When I have my chemo I am gone for a full day so they could have come and taken more of my stuff.
“When Wesley phoned to say he would fit the window for free I was over the moon and it really put my mind at rest. It just goes to show that there are some decent people left in this world.”
The frame was from NTC Conservatories, the window pane from Oldham Glass and silicon from Oldham Trade Plastics.
