RUNNERS and walkers tied up their trainers and took to Alexandra Park yesterday during Oldham’s seventh annual Race for Life.

Damp weather failed to dampen the spirits of just under 2,000 women who took up the charity challenge with smiles on their faces.

Hula girls, Smurfs and a giant teddy bear joined in a mass warm up to “YMCA” before setting off at 11am on the five kilometre route.

One of the first over the line was 11-year-old Chloe Bingham who ran the course in just over 20 minutes.

Also taking part was Oldham Evening Chronicle deputy news editor Janice Barker who achieved a personal best by finishing in 27 minutes 32 seconds.

She said: “The day was warm but a bit damp, however the drizzle and breeze kept us cool.

“The park looked great, and everyone seemed to finish with a smile on their face, even if they were puffing and panting.”

Over £760,000 has been raised by Oldham women for Cancer Research UK during the past six races, with another £118,000 raised following this year’s event.

Rachel Hewitt, event organiser, said: “It was an amazing day and so much fun despite the weather.

“The women of Oldham really got into the spirit of the event. We are now urging everyone to collect and send in their sponsorship money.”

Anyone encouraged to carry on running after the Race for Life can take part in Cancer Research’s Run 10k events this autumn.

The nearest one is at Heaton Park on October 3, or for those who fancy travelling further, Tatton Park on September 26.
