Library, baths and station ideas

Details of the new development brief for Chadderton’s town centre conservation area will be outlined at the Chadderton District Partnership meeting at Kingfisher School tomorrow (7pm).
Oldham Council and Greater Manchester Police have prepared the scheme for the area around the old town hall, which is now Oldham Register Office.
They want to retain and re-use the old swimming pool, police station and library. It also includes the town hall gardens and listed war memorial, the cottages next to the town hall and a short row of cottages on Victoria Street.
Plans have already been discussed at the Chadderton Heritage and Culture Working Group and sent to Chadderton Historical Society and the British Legion’s Reform Club on Middleton Road.
The brief is for a high-quality, mixed-use development which adds to the town centre mix and retains the empty buildings.
Officers say the library retains most of its original features, the police station has been changed significantly inside but has the original frontage on Victoria Street and the swimming pool is an important local example of the art-deco style.
