Kumon Sam, do the maths

EXTRA study has added up to maths success for Sam Cox.
The 14-year-old, from Chadderton, has received a level “I” award from the Kumon maths programme — completing the type of algebra, factorisation and square-root work found in GCSE exams — despite not always wanting to do it!
The method of learning was developed in 1954 by Japanese parent and teacher Toru Kumon. There are more than 600 Kumon after-school study centres in the UK and Ireland which offer maths and English programmes.
Sam attends the Chadderton centre and was among 40 students who received Kumon awards at a ceremony in Liverpool.
The Blue Coat School pupil said: “I have been doing Kumon for seven years and it has enabled me to help others using the techniques I have gained.
“Kumon can often be difficult and at I don’t always want to do it, but I know it’s worthwhile.”
