ALEXANDRA Park cafe is set to undergo major refurbishment before it reopens under new management.
The cafe will be run by the council’s Community Vocational Service, which helps people with disabilities find employment.
The previous tenant left the cafe at the end of March when their contract ended, and work is under way to find a contractor to carry out a revamp.
Partnership
Named as a heritage building in the borough’s flagship park, the outside will remain unchanged but the interior will be renovated .
The move is a partnership between social services and the parks and countryside department.
It will run in a similar way as the Culture Cafe in Gallery Oldham, offering disabled people the opportunity to expand their work experience and develop skills and confidence as well as work towards nationally recognised qualifications.
Councillor John McCann, Cabinet member for regeneration and environment, said: “Plans to transform Alexandra Park boathouse into a high-quality facility are progressing well. I am confident that this fantastic venue will be open before the end of the year.”
