AN Oldham student has reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and raised £4,000 for charity.
Arif Ahmed Mohid from Coppice climbed the 5,895 metre African peak in between running his family store and training to be a teacher!
The 23-year-old’s efforts raised money for child victims of the wars in Afghanistan.
Arif, a Manchester University graduate, runs the family’s shop in Sickle Street, Glodwick, supporting his mum and three sisters, and is completing his teaching qualification.
His climb is raising money for the Muslim Hands charity during its annual Green Ribbon week, which raises money for children suffering in conflicts around the world.
He said climbing Tanzania’s gruelling 19,340ft peak did cause him some altitude sickness, but added: “I’m glad I managed to reach the top, and not have to go back again.
“Although I was on my own, the group I climbed with became really good friends, and we all helped each other out. I’m glad I’ve done it, it was really challenging, and you get really breathless really quickly.”
