Flower show set for the compost heap if couple not replaced
ORGANISERS of the Denshaw Flower Show say the 30th anniversary event next year will be the last unless someone comes forward to take over.

Neville and Judy Burton, who now live in Delph, have been helping put on the show for 27 years since they ran the post office in Denshaw.

However, after Neville underwent a double heart by-pass operation, the couple are finally ready to call it a day.

Neville, (75), said: “We’ve said it before, but it is too much for us to do now at our age and next year will be our last time.

“We have kept on because it would be incredibly sad to see it go, but someone from Denshaw should take over.”

This year’s show is scheduled for Saturday, August 21, which will once again see decorative dahlias, fantastic fuchsias and giant vegetables in competition and on display.

But the couple are worried that the green extravaganza will end should no-one volunteer to take up the mantle.

Judy, (72), said: “Last year we had almost 50 people take part in over 200 exhibits.

“We’ve had some great fun and we have been able to give a lot of money to the church over the years and everybody in the community enjoys the day.

“The community is building now, people are showing interest in new allotments and these people could take over from us.”

The keen gardeners want someone to learn the ropes this year and next before taking over in 2012.
