TWO local charities were given a massive boost this week as cheques totalling £5,000, raised at the Saddleworth show, were handed over.

Rotary Club organisers of the summer spectacular were on hand to present Dr Kershaw’s hospice and children’s charity, MedEquip4Kids, with £2,500 each.

Representatives from show sponsors Veolia and the Oldham Evening Chronicle met with organisers from the Saddleworth and Oldham Metro clubs to make the first presentations at the White Hart, Lydgate.

Gordon Russell, president of Oldham Metro Rotary Club, said: “We are very pleased with the money raised, particularly as the last two hours were pouring with rain. The Saddleworth show raised £15,000 this year, to get a double-figured sum is a great amount of cash.

“All the money raised will go to local and Rotary charities and these are just the first cheques.”

Money donated to MedEquip4Kids will be spent on specialist equipment for the Royal Oldham Hospital’s children’s ward.
