VOLUNTEERS are needed to help transform a derelict school building in Higginshaw into a thriving community venue.
Higginshaw Rugby Club is behind the exciting Higginshaw Community Project (HCP) that is looking to boost the deprived area through the renovation of the former St Stephen’s School.
It aims to create a venue for community groups to use as well as provide employment opportunities.
Work is already underway with HCP registered as a charity and the purchase of the building completed.
Organisers are now looking for residents help to strip out junk from the buildingso that it can be refurbished.
The “Stripout” takes place tomorrow and Sunday from 9am, and organisers are also looking for sponsorship for new materials alongside the disposal of any debris accumulated during the clear out.
A HCP board, headed by rugby club secretary John Mellor, has worked tirelessly to apply for Government funding and get community groups on board with a series of presentations. It has also secured support from local MP Phil Woolas and the East Oldham Partnership.
Money has already been raised to repair the roof and make it water tight, and carry out a full structural survey.
Plans have been drawn up for it to include a gymnasium, fitness centre, sports hall, changing rooms, toilet facilities and a bar area.
An extension is planned for the back of the property and an outdoor children’s play area. It’s hoped all members of the local community will make use of the facility.
Anyone who can help with the stripout or local companies that can sponsor a skip or make a donation are asked to call Mr Mellor on 07970 100606.
