Jumping for joy!

SUPER students from Hathershaw College of Technology and Sport proved they were top of the class with this year’s best-ever GCSE results for the school.

A total of 84 per cent of its pupils achieved five A-C grades, up from 72 per cent last year, and 47 per cent of pupils hit the grade in English and maths, up from 42 per cent last year.

Top achievers included Aleena Bhatti, from Copsterhill Road, Hathershaw, who topped the tables with eight A*s, 7As and 1 B.

The stunned 16-year-old will now study A-level biology, chemistry, maths, psychology and photography at Oldham Sixth Form College and plans a career in dentistry.

She said: “I am shocked and shaken. I wasn’t expecting these results. I have not told my parents yet but I think they will be very surprised. I’m chuffed to bits.”

Fellow star-student Imogen Hodgkiss (16), from Swallow Street, Hollins, scooped 7A*s and 9As, and will now study A-level biology, chemistry, psychology and maths at Oldham Sixth Form College and is planning a career in medicine.

She said: “I was hoping for these results. Everyone said I would get them, which I didn’t believe.

“I have studied very hard for this and now I am going to go and make my mum buy me lots of clothes.”

Her mother, Bernadette Gill (47), a housing association officer, said: “I am stunned. She was given predicted grades of As and Bs but these results are amazing.”

Delighted head teacher Carol Cawkwell said: “Once again we are celebrating the best results ever. We are delighted that the hard work of students and staff in years 9, 10 and 11 are exceeding all targets.”
