Maths whizz passes A-level two years early

GCSE:

HARD work plus revision equals exam success for numbers whizz Oliur Rahman who picked an A-level in maths alongside eight A* GCSE grades.

The 16-year-old Grange School pupil, from Hurst Street, Westwood, took the A-level two years early and achieved a B grade.

And the entrepreneurial teen had to postpone celebrations with fellow students - as he had a job interview for a part-time position with Littlewoods.

Oliur, who also gained one C, one D, and a distinction in IT, said: “I’m in shock, but I’m really pleased with my results — it’s what I was hoping for. I told my dad and he is ecstatic.”

Oliur plans to work weekends while studying A-levels in physics, economics, IT and further maths at Oldham Sixth-Form College.

With ambitions to be an investment banker in London, the teen is also contemplating resitting his maths A-level to boost his grade to A*.

He said: “I’ve worked hard for this, you have to put your all into studying.

“I’ve spent the past few weeks enjoying not having exams but that has worn off and I’m looking forward to starting college.”

A future in fashion or journalism lies ahead for star student Shima Khanom (16), from West End Street, Coldhurst.

With three A*, one A, two Bs, four Cs and a distinction in art, she has performed better than her two older brothers and three older sisters and is set to start at Oldham Sixth-Form College in September.

She said: “When the school called me on Monday night to come in early on Tuesday, I thought I was in trouble or I had bad GCSE results and they were going to let me down gently.

“I’m shocked with my results but pleased.

“I’ll be studying A-levels in English language and literature, film studies, sociology and textile art.

“I’m really excited about the future.”

Gilly McMullen, head teacher at the school which becomes Oldham Academy North on September 7, said: “Our Ofsted report in July deemed the school good in relation to pupil progress, behaviour and attendance.

“Inspectors gave leadership and management a good rating, as well as for the head and the deputy.

“It was also good for transition from school to academy.

Fantastic

“This year, we have accelerated the students GCSE results by 10 per cent, from 27 per cent to 37 per cent.

“All this gives a fantastic baseline for the academy which must now move to outstanding.”

Kevin Leyden, chairman of governors, said: “Its an excellent result and we worked very hard to achieve it.

“Gilly McMullen, senior management and hard working staff have worked together to achieve these results.”
