Boys narrow the gap

GCSE:

BOYS are catching up girls in the top grades at Hulme Grammar Schools.

Pupils scored a 91 per cent pass rate, with almost one-quarter achieving nine or more A* or A grades, including 14 star pupils who gained at least 10A* or A grades.

The pass rate is similar to last year but the number of A* have risen dramatically. For girls the A* rate stayed the same at just over 15 per cent but for the boys it increased from nine to 15 per cent.

Principal Dr Paul Neeson said there were some outstanding results and he was delighted.

He added: “When I look at the results I look all the way down. Did they achieve what they should have achieved and the answer is yes they have done.

“It’s down to their hard work and that of my colleagues. Without good teaching you don’t get anywhere.”

Star pupil was Louise Bintliff (16), from Ashton, who gained 10 A*. She will stay on at the school’s sixth form to sit five A-levels, and wants to go to university to study either law, finance or business.

She said: “I am kind of shocked. I thought I had done well, but not this well.”

Sheik Raja (16), from Glodwick, was disappointed at narrowly missing out on a clean sweep of A* bit still delighted at getting nine A* and one A. He’s waiting to hear if he’s got into Eton College but could also stay on at Hulme’s sixth form to study five A-levels. He wants to be a neurosurgeon.

He said: “I’m ecstatic. I’m a bit disappointed with the A but I had a few hiccups on the way. But overall I’m really happy. My parents are pleased and proud.”

Daniela Soldner (16), from Greenfield, got six A* and three As and is heading to Oldham Sixth Form College to do four A-levels. She wants to go into advertising.

She said: “I’m relieved. I spent a lot of time stressing but I feel a lot better now
