Open days reveal all about historic Oldham
Date published: 07 September 2010
OldhamERS have a chance to look behind the scenes at local heritage gems at special open days this month.
Churches, parks and a museum are joining in the annual Heritage Open Days event, part of the national scheme organised by English Heritage from Thursday-Sunday. There are tours of the Mayor’s parlour and the civic silverware at Oldham Civic Centre, a heritage roadshow in the education suite at Gallery Oldham and a quiz to test local knowledge of Oldham at the Local Studies and Archives centre in Union Street. See archives at a special open evening on Thursday at 7pm and look at original materials and recent discoveries.
The tours go out and about with a Huddersfield Canal Society walk led by Oldham Council’s heritage champion, Mike Buckley, a town centre trail looking at Oldham’s architectural heritage, and a walk following the old road through Oldham.
Alexandra Park, the Castleshaw Roman forts and Greenacres Cemetery are also explored with experts. Saddleworth Museum and the surrounding village libraries are also recording Saddleworth voices for posterity.
