MP’s pride at Pakistan flood response

LOCAL MP Phil Woolas has praised Oldhamers for their support of the Pakistan Floods Appeal.
Mr Woolas, who represents Oldham East and Saddleworth, echoed the words of Brendan Gormley, chief executive of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), in urging anyone who has not yet donated to give generously.
The DEC is the umbrella group for Britain’s leading aid and relief charities including Oxfam, Save the Children and Christian Aid and has already raised an incredible £29 million to support relief efforts.
Over 20 million people in Pakistan are now affected by the devastating floods and agencies like UNICEF are warning of the increasing threat to survivors from waterborne diseases.
Mr Woolas said: “The response by people across Britain to the floods in Pakistan has been incredible, and I am proud that thousands of local people in Oldham have joined the ever growing numbers doing their bit for the nearly 20 million people affected by this terrible disaster.
“This crisis is sadly unfolding in deadly slow motion, with the real risk of waterborne diseases now affecting millions of women, men and children.
“I would therefore urge anyone who hasn’t already done so, to consider donating to the DEC appeal. You can make a donation in all the usual ways, such as calling 0370-60 60 900 — and even donate £5 by texting the word GIVE to 70707.”
