Wendy’s on the run for rescue team

Wendy Krastins is all set to pound the pavements of Newcastle — for a cause close to home.

Wendy will be tackling the Bupa Great North Run for the sixth time, to raise funds for the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team — of which her father, Peter Hyde, is a life-long member and current team treasurer.

Wendy (47), tele-ad supervisor at the Chronicle, said: “My dad has been a volunteer with the team for as long as I can remember.

“He’s the team treasurer and works mainly on the radio now, but I just knew I wanted to raise as much funds for the team as possible. I’m looking forward to it.”

As an experienced competitor, Wendy, from Hollins, said she is ready for the race but admits she will be feeling nervous on the day.

She is determined to run the whole way, and not even a week-long holiday in Spain just a week before the half marathon will deter her from jogging across the finish line.

Joining her in the popular event is her husband, John Krastins (46), and they will be running as a pair until the very last mile. She said: “John hasn’t done as much training as me so I’ve agreed to run with him most of the way.

“However, when we reach the water front and there is just a mile to go, it’s every man for himself.”
