Events to raise money for charities

THERE is something for everyone in Mayor of Oldham David Jones’s list of charity events.

The list includes a half marathon, the possible return of the Oldham beer festival, a steam train trip, concerts, fine dining and comedy.

One of the first major events takes place at the White Hart, Lydgate when Councillor Jones hosts a Hallowe’en luncheon on Sunday, October 31.

Guests at the lunch can win prizes by taking along a Hallowe’en themed table decoration. Booking (£27.50 a head) should be made at the White Hart (01457 872566).

The steam train trip, probably in March or April next year, will also involve a three-course luncheon served during a steam train on the East Lancs Railway.

Shaw Playhouse will host an event for the charity appeal and members of Congress Players will stage a “Songs from the Shows” event.

A comedy night at The Royal George, Greenfield, will swell the charity coffers as well as raising lots of laughs.

A sponsored three-day walk of the borough’s boundaries will be held in November and a half-marathon event will involve local athletes in the charity appeal in April next year.

It is hoped to stage the Remembrance Tattoo at the Queen Elizabeth Hall following on from last year’s hugely popular event but the QE Hall has again been ruled out as a possible venue for the beer festival. The Mayor, however, remains determined to run a festival this year, using either local pubs or, possibly, Uppermill Civic Hall.

A golf day at Crompton and Royton is pencilled in for April/May next year and many of the areas clubs and restaurants have expressed an interest in staging an event to support the Mayor’s three main charities — the Ace Centre which provided aids for severely handicapped children; the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, and Diabetes UK.
