YOUNGSTERS have been learning the importance of line and length thanks to two determined bowls players in Shaw.

Organisers of the coaching sessions at Dunwood Park have been bowled over by their success and the number of youngsters stepping up to take up the challenge.

Children as young as three have been lapping up the free tuition on the green from two members of the club.

Keen bowler, Ian Fitton (65) decided to set up the classes, with the help of friend Barbara, to encourage new blood into the sport. As many as 30 children attended the sessions.

Ian said: “There are hardly any youngsters who play bowls anymore and I wanted to bring bowling back to what it used to be.

“It has been so successful, my dream would be to set up a youth bowling league in Oldham — it would be fantastic.

“I’ll be here every day of every summer holidays to pass on my passion for bowling.”

The sessions have been made possible by sponsors Warburtons Bakery and the Friends of Dunwood Park group.

The sporting stars will now be toasting the end to a terrific season with a match and presentation on Sunday.
