Fly-tipping figures piling up fast
Date published: 16 September 2010
CASES of fly-tipping have increased in Oldham — and cost nearly twice as much to clean up as a neighbouring area.
An investigation undertaken by AnyJunk, the UK’s largest on-demand rubbish clearance company, found a slight rise in incidents of illegally dumped rubbish in Oldham last year — up from 1,056 to 1,096.
The average clean-up cost was £100 per incident costing the council £109,600 to remove the waste. This compares with £56.61 per fly-tip in Trafford, which suffered 1,581 cases, and £68.36 in Bury, which suffered 2,625 incidents.
Rochdale experienced a large rise with 2,352 incidents in 2009/10, up from 1,934 the previous year. But it did not supply clean-up costs.
AnyJunk used official figures obtained from councils under the Freedom of Information Act to study fly-tipping in 148 council boroughs across the UK.
