SPRIGHTLY Phil Buckley did Oldham proud with his efforts at the World Championship Triathlon.

The 62-year-old travelled to Hungary to compete in the three-part event of cycling, swimming and running.

The former beat bobby, who was selected to represent Great Britain in the 60-65 age category, finished 21st out of 37 competitors.

Participants swam in the River Danube before sprinting and cycling around the city.

Phil, who retired from the police force after 25 years in 2003, said he is already thinking about preparations for next year’s event.

He added: “I’m going for a top 10 finish next year and a top-three position the year after that.

“I was in the top five in the cycling event as that is my speciality but I found the swimming hard so I’ll work on that.

“I was pleased with my result though and I am looking forward to improving next time.”

Phil, who now works as an environmental enforcement officer for Oldham Council, is competing in another triathlon at Tatton Park this weekend.
