Operation Gullies
Date published: 20 September 2010
A MASS clean up of Oldham’s 42,600 roadside drainage gullies is underway.
Most of the gullies will be cleaned with jets of water but those that are badly blocked will be dug out.
The essential work will help reduce the risk of flood damage when it rains.
The finished work will ensure a more effective drainage system is in place over the winter months.
Councillor John McCann, cabinet member for regeneration and environment, said: “A build up of water on the carriageway can be dangerous to motorists and pedestrians, while also heightening the chance of flooding to properties.
“That means it is essential all our gullies are clear so the excess water can drain away. And to do this we have had to recover from years of lack of maintenance.
“Gullies can become blocked due to localised problems, so please report them to 0161-770 4325 or email highways@oldham.gov.uk”
