Old town hall cleared of debris
Date published: 21 September 2010
Oldham’s crumbling former town hall in Yorkshire Street has been cleared of debris by specialist contractors, following a visit by councillors and officers last year which revealed extensive decay.
Councillors agreed in April to allocate £700,000 to protect the building while a developer is found.
Detailed building specifications have also been drawn up and an historical recording made.
Work will involve structural and roof repairs to stabilise the building and make it weathertight.
The £176,000 contract will be carried out by Aura Conservation of Stockport, a company which is experienced in structural work to listed buildings.
