A WOMAN was attacked with a hammer and then assaulted outside an off-licence in Hathershaw.

The 28-year-old victim was first attacked at a house in Copsterhill Road on Saturday, August 14.

She managed to leave the house and went to California Wines in Ashton Road.

As she left the off-licence she was attacked again by the same man, who punched and kicked her to the ground. A group of men saw the attack and challenged the offender, who ran off.

He is described as white, 5ft 6in tall and of slim build with short, black hair.

The victim suffered a cut to her arm, cuts to her fingers and badly bruised fingers and toes.

Det Con Dyan Norton said: “We know that a group of men saw this second attack and I am appealing for them to contact police as they are vital witnesses.

“The victim suffered terrible injuries at the hands of this man and it is important we catch him, so if you have any information please contact the police.”

A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed until Tuesday, October 26, pending further inquiries.
