Chadderton District Partnership: WORK to spruce-up Rochdale Canal is set to get a £20,000 boost.
And that amount again will be spent on projects to cut crime and promote walking in Chadderton as well as overhauling the war memorial on Middleton Road.
The partnership agreed in principal to spend £20,000 to support environmental projects on the Chadderton stretch of the canal, such as improving access and towpaths and installing information boards. They hope the commitment will lead to £50,000 of funding from other sources.
Another £6,300 will extend the Let’s Go for A Walk scheme into Chadderton’s parks and along the canal, producing guides and funding organised walks.
The Chadderton Crime Prevention Initiative will receive £6,000 to provide around 3,000 timer light switches to a minimum of 1,000 homes in burglary hot-sports in a bid to cut crime as the nights draw in. However, the possibility of imposing a small charge for residents — which could increase the number of people who benefit — is being explored.
The Grade-II-listed war memorial will also benefit from £8,055 to clean and repair the bronze statue and stone work, as well as adding a dedication to honour servicemen and women who have died in conflicts since World War II.
