The NHS Blood and Transplant Service is urging Oldham residents to become regular blood platelet donors.
Donors provide vital blood and platelet donations needed to help most vulnerable patients. Platelets are very small cells in the blood which help to stem blood loss by enabling clotting. Platelet transfusions are given to patients whose bone marrow isn’t working properly — which often means cancer or leukaemia sufferers undergoing chemotherapy.
Platelet transfusions are also a vital part of the treatment for some premature babies who may be susceptible to brain haemorrhage. Transfusions of just two or three teaspoons-worth of platelets can cut the risk of them dying.
Demand for platelets has risen over the last few years and with crucial supplies only having a five-day shelf-life.
Barbara Blanche, lead donor relations manager for NHSBT, said: “Commitment, time and a high platelet count are the qualities needed. Donating platelets takes longer than blood donation and can be done more frequently.“
Local donation centres can carry out tests for suitable donors. Blood group A donors are also needed. Information on 0161-423 5101 or 0161-251 4218.
