ROADS across Oldham will be brought up to scratch with a £10 million resurfacing scheme over four years.
New head of highways and engineering Phil Matley attended the partnership meeting to explain how members and residents can nominate roads that need urgent repairs.
He said: “This is fabulous news. It means it will reduce our backlog by 25 per cent.”
Mr Matley said £1.5 million will be spent this year, with work starting in November, £3 million in years two and three, and £2.5 million in the final year.
Each District Partnership will be delegated £25,000 per ward each year over four years — so with four wards, West Oldham will get £100,000 a year to spend on roads it wants treating.
Mr Matley said there had already been feedback from residents with recommendations including Helen Street and West End Street.
He added that he wants to produce a programme of work in which residents have had an input. Traffic problems and traffic calming measures will also be considered.
Councillor Abdul Jabbar said: “It’s timely as some of the roads are not very good and that’s using diplomatic language.”
Mr Matley assured members that money would not be lost and he was happy to consider carrying over whatever’s not spent to the next financial year.
But he said he expected them to be breaking his door down with suggestions of which roads need repairing and admitted that £100,000 would not go a long way..
