15 private-hire cabbies caught touting for fares

OLDHAM Council is clamping down on private-hire drivers who tout for business on the street.

During a recent operation by licensing officers, 15 drivers were caught picking up fares that had not been booked in advance.

They are now being investigated for the offence of plying for hire, and as their insurance does not cover them for picking up fares flagged down in the street, an offence of having no insurance is also being considered.

Councillor Rod Blyth, Cabinet member for public potection and community safety, said: “Oldham Council takes its licensing responsibilities very seriously and it is very worrying that this many drivers were caught in just one evening.

“Public safety is our priority and residents should expect all drivers to comply fully with the law and not place them at risk by driving without appropriate insurance.

“This is one of a series of enforcement operations that the council and its partners will be conducting in the coming months to test drivers compliance and vehicle standards as we head towards Christmas when demand for their services is higher.

“If these drivers are convicted then they will be referred to the Licensing Panel for a review of their licence.”

Inspector Melita Worswick, of Greater Manchester Police, added: “We hope this operation sends a strong message to rogue drivers that we will not tolerate them in the borough.

“We also want to raise awareness that passengers need to take steps to ensure their own safety.”

“It can be difficult when people are waiting for a car on a cold and wet night but it is vital that they plan ahead and always use a correctly licensed vehicle.”
