AN Oldham mum accused of murdering her toddler has blamed her boyfriend for the death.

Claire Flanagan (22) had previously denied knowing how Violet Mullen suffered “catastrophic” internal injuries at her Huddersfield Road home — but told a jury she now believes her partner Gary Alcock was responsible.

The 15-month-old had been “viciously attacked”, Manchester Crown Court heard. Both Miss Flanagan and Mr Alcock were arrested and now deny charges of murder and causing or allowing Violet’s death.

Miss Flanagan earlier told detectives she did not have any idea the baby girl was allegedly being abused at their home. But in a dramatic turn of events, she told the court that the evidence points the finger at Alcock.

Miss Flanagan, sobbing in the dock, said: “Hearing all the evidence, wondering where the blood had come from, it points the finger at Alcock. I trusted that man with my child. But that’s where the blame lies.”

Asked if she ever hit Violet, she said: “I would never slap my child. It would be a tap on the bum, nothing more than that.”

She denied causing any of the injuries that led to the toddler’s death.

Following Miss Flanagan’s arrest after little Violet’s death on January 12, she was told that Mr Alcock was known to social services because of concerns about domestic violence.

Mr Alcock’s former partner Tanya Marshall, earlier told the jury that he was possessive and controlling.

She claimed he would turn violent during rows in their eight-year relationship and used steroids.

But when questioned by his barrister David Fish QC, Mr Alcock denied the allegations, and said he was not violent or controlling.
