CHADDERTON professor and former Hulme Grammar School pupil Brian Cox swapped his lab coat for a morning suit as he received his OBE for services to science from the Queen at Buckingham Palace yesterday.
The 42-year-old is Professor of Particle Physics and Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Manchester. He was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June.
Saddleworth-based Professor Cox, the former keyboard player in 1990s band D:ream, has become the latest of British TV’s great science popularisers, helping to explain the mysteries of the cosmos to viewers in simple terms.
He is also a UK representative on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva — the world’s most powerful particle experiment.
