HEFFERNAN: dropped by Lib-Dems
SADDLEWORTH Lib-Dem councillor Derek Heffernan said he is very disappointed that he will not represent the party at next year’s local elections.
The councillor, who has represented the Saddleworth North ward for 16 years on Oldham Council, said he has not been told the reasons behind the decision.
He said: “I was incredibly keen to stand for the position, but they have decided to deselect me.
“I thought I should have been the candidate — I was really surprised. I have had consistent support and a good majority of almost 1000 votes four years ago.”
It is understood that Simon Fitton, a well-known businessman from Denshaw, will fight the seat for the Liberal Democrats next May after being selected by the party last month.
First elected to Saddleworth Parish Council in 1987, Councillor Heffernan was later elected on to Oldham Council.
He said he would not run as an independent once he has finished serving in six months time, but is reviewing his options and intends to continue on Saddleworth Parish Council.
He said: “I’ve worked hard for 16 years and I am disappointed with what has happened.
“Obviously a massive thank you goes to the people who have supported me over the years. It’s just sad they won’t be the ones who decide whether or not I continue. It doesn’t mean you’ve seen the back of me, though.”
There will be another change of Saddleworth candidates, with Christine Wheeler due to retire from her seat in Saddleworth South to be replaced with Phil Renold, a current parish councillor and political activist for the Liberal Democrats.
Jackie Stanton, deputy leader of the council, said: “Derek and I got elected at the same time.
“He has been an incredibly hard-working councillor over the years.”
