A YOUNG mum died from an injury in a freak accident as she walked her son to school.

It is thought 31-year-old Jayne Kew suddenly decided to run home after suffering a stomach upset and either tripped, fell or collapsed, suffering a deep tear to her liver as she landed.

Her young son Christopher rushed to their home in Old Road, Failsworth, to alert his dad — but paramedics and surgeons were unable to save the much-loved mum’s life, an inquest at Oldham Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday.

After suffering stomach upset in the days before the incident, she declined partner Neil Mitchell’s offer to walk Christopher to school, saying it might do her good and she would see a doctor later.

But she fell or collapsed within minutes of setting off on April 1 last year. Months later, son Christopher was able to explain he had been walking ahead when he saw her suddenly turn and start running home. She fell and hit her head.

Mr Mitchell found her lying on the pavement, conscious but breathing heavily. On the way to hospital her heart stopped and paramedic Andrew Kay performed CPR for around 45 minutes.

Drugs were used in case Miss Kew had suffered a blood clot — but while they were the only option, and could have saved her life, they would have unwittingly made the bleeding worse.

Miss Kew was given a blood transfusion and sent to surgery to stop internal bleeding, but died shortly after surgery.

Pathologist Dr Vinita Charan said the death was caused by heavy bleeding from a very deep 5cm tear to the liver. She could find no reason for the fall or collapse.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Coroner Simon Nelson said it was not known whether Miss Kew tripped, fell or collapsed but the need to return home resulted in her injury.

He added: “This has been one of the saddest inquiries I have had to undertake, not only because of the age of Miss Kew but because of the circumstances and involvement of Christopher at the time.”

An emotional Mr Mitchell described Miss Kew as a bubbly character. A senior care assistant at Failsworth’s Brierfield Nursing Home, she had helped others by donating organs after her death.
