Caterpillar sculpture takes the cake
Date published: 26 October 2010
A SLICE of public open space in Hathershaw has been transformed, thanks to an unusual piece of art based on one of Park Cake Bakeries most popular cakes.
The legendary Colin the Caterpillar cake has been one of the Ashton Road bakery’s biggest sellers for several years, and was the catalyst for the sculpture. It now sits on a plot of land on the corner of Bellfield Avenue and Ashton Road, which has been tidied up and given a new path and a small seating area as part of the makeover. Designed by Green Monster Arts on behalf of New Deal for Communities (NDC), the caterpillar sculpture was created with the help of pupils from Hathershaw School, assisted by Park Cake — one of the area’s biggest employers.
The sculpture was unveiled by some of the people who made it happen, who followed it with a celebration at the Honeywell Centre, Hathershaw.
