Speeders caught on one road

A SADDLEWORTH councillor has condemned 89 drivers caught speeding by police on the A635 Manchester Road in Greenfield.

Councillor Richard Knowles has hit out at what he describes as selfish motorists after the results from the six-day checks were released.

The latest speeding swoop by local police caught a staggering 15 offences an hour, with motorists pulled over and warned of the dangerous consequences of driving too fast, although none has been prosecuted.

Councillor Knowles said: “These speed checks speak for themselves. A large number of selfish motorists are putting their lives at risk by driving too fast.

“Some reckless drivers won’t slow down until they are prosecuted. They are putting pedestrians’, children’s and other motorists’ lives in danger.”

Complaints from local residents, sick and tired of high-speed drivers passing through the village, sparked the latest crackdown.

The speeding limit on the road was reduced from 40mph to 30mph in 2003, following a road-safety campaign.

Councillor Knowles said that there has been a long record of speeding motorists, particularly common between the Clarence junction and St Mary’s Primary School.

Insp Danny Milovanovic, of the neighbourhood policing team, said: “Officers were surprised by the number of motorists caught speeding. Drivers need to realise that there is a speed limit for a reason.”

There are now plans to carry out further speed checks in the area.
