CCTV as the manager squares up to the knifeman
A SUPERMARKET manager bravely fought a knife-wielding thug attempting to rob his Oldham store.
Police have released CCTV footage of the terrifying struggle in a bid to bring the would-be robber to justice.
The armed raider went into the Aldi store on Eagle Street and appeared to be a regular shopper as he picked up some milk, a loaf and some butter and went to the till.
But after the shop assistant scanned the items and answered his question on the cost, he brandished a knife and demanded cash.
Struggle
The frightened woman screamed and ran to the back of the store. The area manager then came out of a side office and tackled the knifeman as he tried to leave.
A scuffle ensued at the store entrance but the thug kept hold of the weapon and the manager eventually backed off.
The would-be robber ran out of the store empty-handed, across the car park, over Manchester Street and on to the Pennine Way car park.
Police have just released details about the crime, on September 2 at 7.30pm, and are now urging anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV pictures to come forward.
He is described as white, in his early 20s, of slim build and about 5ft 6in tall with some facial hair. He was wearing a white baseball cap and a dark coat with dark-coloured trousers.
Detective Constable Emily Goonan, of Oldham CID, said: “Although this man did not steal anything, clearly the intent was there and the fact he was prepared to use fear and intimidation by threatening staff with a knife shows what he is capable of.
“I am appealing to anyone who recognises him to call us.
“The manager was extremely brave in trying to tackle him, and both he, and the staff member this offender threatened, deserve the peace of mind of seeing this man identified and locked up. I want to assure the public that we will do everything we can to find this man, and releasing this footage is just one aspect of our investigation.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Oldham CID on 0161-856 8951 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555 111.
