Lest we forget

OLDHAMERS can honour fallen service men and women as the borough gears up to mark Remembrance Day.
In conjunction with branches of the Royal British Legion, services will be taking place at venues across Oldham on Sunday.
The Oldham Council website — and its online presence on social networking sites Twitter and Facebook — is now displaying the poppy logo in support of the Royal British Legion’s annual appeal.
Gallery Oldham is also selling 25 limited edition prints of a watercolour painting depicting the poppy projection on the civic centre last year.
The prints, on sale from Thursday, are £25.99 and all proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion.
Council leader Howard Sykes said: “We are delighted to again be showing our support for the Royal British Legion’s outstanding charity work through its annual appeal.
“This year their emphasis is on the need to help the generation of the armed forces fighting in Afghanistan — and their families.
“The poppy has become a symbol of reflection and hope and — at a time when casualties in Afghanistan continue to make daily news — the sacrifices that others make to protect our freedoms are very clear.
“I would urge all citizens to please give generously to the appeal and to wear your poppies with pride.”
