SKI POLES APART . . .Lucas Henderson
CHADDERTON skier Lucas Henderson has beaten the best of the UK’s young talent to win a top title.
The seven-year-old took the boys under-nines crown at the Scottish Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
Lucas, of Aspenwood Drive, had to ski two slalom courses against young skiers.
His time was also the fourth fastest for under-11 boys and Great Britain team skiers Finlay Mickel and Dougie Crawford presented the Chadderton Hall Junior School pupil with his gold medal.
Lucas learnt to ski when he was four and is a member of the Chill Factore Race Club, Trafford, and 2k Performance Race Club, Rossendale.
In July he met some of Britain’s top skiers, including Chemmy Alcott and Ed Drake, at a race camp in Hemel Hempstead.
He also plays football for Chadderton Park Lions team and dad Cameron said: “He is certainly not forced into the racing, it’s for his own enjoyment and he mixes with a lot of friends from around the country.
“At his age the sport’s managing body want to see how they develop and for them to have fun. It gets a bit more serious when they get into the juniors.
“He is doing very well. He is training a lot and getting better all the time. It’s exciting to watch him race.”
Cameron is hoping to get sponsorship for Lucas and added: “It is into the winter season now and there are some races abroad. We are looking to drive there but, even so, it still costs money.”
