Freecycle success

AN internet site which recycles unwanted household goods such as baby items and furniture has been praised by Oldham Council.

The Oldham Freecycle website is celebrating after reaching 5,000 members who all help to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill.

The expanding online group is part of the global Freecycle Network and offers the chance to offload unwanted household items.

It means they don’t have to be dumped and can be passed on to people unable to afford to buy new or who just want to save money.

Sarah Furbey, from Limeside, set up the Oldham group in 2006. Items offered on the site include furniture, baby items, appliances and much more.

Sarah said: “I am extremely proud that the group has so many members and is well used.

“We moved last year to a purpose-built internet site which has since seen the membership increase.

“Why not join and see if you have just the item someone is looking for lurking in a cupboard? Or why not have a clear out and you just might make someone’s day?”

Anyone wanting to join, or find out more, can log on to the group’s website at www.oldhamfreecycle.org.uk

Oldham Councillor Mark Alcock said: “Freecycle is great. It certainly saves unwanted items being flytipped, dumped or left to gather dust. And I feel it brings people and communities closer together when one person helps another.”
