FROM princess to queen . . . Chealsie Kay
WATERHEAD Academy pupil Chealsie Kay has been crowned the Carnival Queen of Great Britain.
The 16-year-old, of Lindsay Close, Moorside, demonstrated her grace, elegance and good diction to lift the title at St Herbert’s Church, Chadderton.
Chealsie, who is a member of Royelles Dance Troupe, won the princess title for 12 to 15-year-olds two years ago.
She was one of the youngest competitors in the senior competition which is open to girls aged 16 to 24.
Her proud mum Jeanette said: “It was unreal when they announced that she had won. She was shaking and crying. It was lovely.”
Chealsie, who wants to be a vet, gets to keep her crown, sash and trophy for a year and will carry out fund-raising work.
Her first engagement is opening the Christmas fair at St James’s Church, Derker, on Saturday and Jeanette added: “She will do this year and her retiring year, then it all depends on college and university if she continues.
“She really loves it. She likes wearing the big dresses and raising money.”
