Now you see it — now you don’t

A SUPERMARKET mix-up has been blamed for a giant sign being installed at the new Tesco in Greenfield without planning permission.

Locals and councillors were left fuming when the 18ft illuminated sign was erected despite an application not due to go before planners until December 9.

Councillor Richard Knowles immediately contacted planning officials at Oldham Council and visited the site over the weekend. But the firm claims it was merely installing the sign in a bid to provide evidence for the forthcoming application.

A spokesman said: “We have been in discussion with the local authority and put the sign up on Friday to demonstrate that it wouldn’t be obtrusive.

“We have already reduced the sign from what was originally planned quite considerably.”

The sign which was wrapped in black tarpaulin, has now been taken down.

Councillor Knowles said: “This gantry is completely unnecessary, they already have permission for giant illuminated signs on the building.

“I’m pleased they have co-operated but it is a bit radical if it needs local councillors to remind a large company such as Tesco how things are supposed to be done.”

Residents have also voiced their concerns with one local saying he was ‘shocked and appalled’ at what he called a blatant disregard for the planning process.

The company has also assured locals that the industrial units that it was thought could hold up the opening of the store will be built and available in time for the planned date of December 6.

A spokesperson said: “We are on track with the units and they will be ready in time.

“Businesses have already showed interest in them which is fantastic in today’s climate, I think that’s a good sign for Greenfield and the local area.”
