AN inspirational former Counthill School teacher and campaigner has died after a long illness.
Dorothy Makin (70) taught three generations of children at the secondary which has been replaced by Waterhead Academy.
She was also a committed campaigner against injustice and was among the women who protested against American nuclear missiles at Greenham Common.
A sufferer of PIck’s disease – a rare neurodegenerative disorder — she was cared for by her daughter, Tabitha (47), and died at home with her family in Ripponden, on November 16.
The funeral was in Elland, Halifax, on Wednesday; the congregation included teachers from Oldham, as well as people she had inspired to become writers.
Her daughter said: “She was head of year and a proper old-school English teacher. She taught three generations and she just adored children. She was a special person.”
