TOWN Cryer Andrew Powell in full voice as he reads the Lancashire Proclamation in Shaw
PROUD Lancastrians celebrated their county’s special day on Saturday with flag-waving and readings of the Lancashire Proclamation.
Town-cryers Andrew Powell, in Shaw, and Reg Lord, in Chadderton, both towns of the Lancashire County Palatine, rang the bell to announce Lancashire Day.
It is commemorated on November 27, the day chosen by the Friends of Real Lancashire group, and marks the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to the parliament of King Edward I of England, later known as the Model Parliament.
A county palatine is one headed by a hereditary nobleman, with special authority, who swore allegiance to the monarch but has power to rule largely independently. They were created in Norman times to protect the fringes of the country. The Queen is Duke of Lancaster, Prince Charles is Duke of Cornwall, the other county palatine.
