THE rubbish found dumped in Frederick Street, Oldham
A HOLLINWOOD man has been left with a £1,400 bill after being prosecuted over flytipping.
Omar Farooq, of Manchester Road, was taken to task by Oldham Council for failing to ensure that commercial waste was disposed of legally.
He claimed to have been approached by two men at his business — the Royal Oak Mini Market in Baguley — who removed, without charge, two commercial fridges and a quantity of cardboard.
The items were later discovered by council staff dumped behind The Hollies on Frederick Street, Oldham, on September 6.
The waste was traced back to Farooq who pleaded guilty to failing in his duty of care in respect of waste at Oldham Magistrates‚ Court. He was fined £600 and ordered to pay £800 costs.
Councillor Rod Blyth, cabinet member for community safety and public protection said: “Illegal waste carriers are responsible for a significant amount of flytipping that occurs in the borough.
“The outcome of this case is a stark warning that if you are disposing of waste through a third party they need to be licensed waste carriers and you need to receive a valid waste transfer notice.
“Officers from the Environmental Action Unit will always investigate fly tipped waste and prosecute where possible.”
